What is a CUDA Core?
At its simplest, a CUDA Core is the fundamental processing unit within an NVIDIA GPU responsible for parallel computation. It’s the GPU’s equivalent of a CPU core, but with a crucial philosophical difference.
The name comes from CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture), which is NVIDIA’s parallel computing platform and programming model. This framework allows developers to use a GPU for general-purpose processing (GPGPU) by writing code in languages like C, C++, and Fortran.
Think of it this way: if a CPU is a master chef meticulously following a complex recipe step-by-step, then a GPU with thousands of CUDA Cores is an army of sous-chefs, each simultaneously chopping a different vegetable. For tasks that can be broken down into thousands of smaller, independent jobs, the “army” wins every time on sheer scale.
