Understanding Organisation Difficulties in Autistic and ADHD Students at school, college and university.
Organisation isn’t a single skill — it involves many mental processes working together. Autistic and ADHD students may struggle with organisation for different reasons, so there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
A major factor is executive dysfunction — difficulties with managing time, staying focused, remembering information, switching between tasks, and following through on plans.
- For many autistic learners, these challenges can make everyday tasks feel overwhelming.
- For students with ADHD, it can feel like there’s no “control tower” in the brain to sort and prioritise incoming information. Everything arrives at once, without a system to filter or manage it.
This leads to mental overload and fatigue. Teachers can support students by:
- Breaking tasks into small, clearly defined steps.
- Providing visual schedules or checklists.
- Offering frequent reminders and opportunities to reset focus.
- Reducing unnecessary sensory and cognitive load.
In short, these students may not lack organisation skills — they may simply be trying to organise far more information and stimulation than most brains can handle.
