Marine Engineering
I am highly skilled and experienced in marine engineering, through over 25 years involvement in electrical, mechanical and radio system engineering.
This knowledge and experience encompasses both theoretical knowledge, gained through academic study, up to level 7.
And also ‘hands on’ practical work, in the telecommunications installation and electronics manufacturing industries.
Experience & Work History
My first full time Marine Engineering job, aged 17 was for a small Marine electronics manufacturer.
The company manufactured charging systems, mainly used aboard yachts, based in the south of France.
After gaining a university degree I worked for a multinational European engineering company.
My work (which was security cleared) was concerned with design reliability (Integrated logistics Support) of Space & Aerospace systems. This included work on ship equipment.
Recently I have worked training Electro-Technical-Officers (ETO), at a world renowned marine training school.
I mainly taught the MNTB sylabus, in practical electrical marine maintenance, as well as marine electrical installation.
Take a look at my blog, for tips on marine engineering.
I have just achieved the MCA acredited AEC, which stands for Approved Engine Course.
It is a recognised MCA (Marine Coastguard Agency) qualification, and extends my range of transferrable engineering skills (electrical, electronic, radio communications (satellite & VHF, HF), and now ships diesel engines (Prime Mover) etc.
Jet Ski Engines
The picture below is of a Jet Ski engine which I recently worked on.
The engine was stripped and rebuilt in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
This included correct torque settings, using a ‘torque wrench’, so that the Jet Ski engine does not come apart, or get damaged due to over tightening of components.
Marine Outboard Motors
I am able to service marine outboard motors , of both two-stroke and four-stroke engine types.
Marine Diesel Engines
I have experience of servicing, rebuilding, and repairing marine diesel engines.
Originally self taught, but now backed up with the MCA Marine Approved Engine Course (AEC), I am competant and confident servcing, diagnosing, and repairing both diesel and petrol marine engines.
Radio Communications (RF) Engineering
My radio communications experience includes installing and repairing two-way radio systems, on land and on ships.
I also have worked for product development companies, developing wireless tagging systems. and an international aerospace manufacturer, who manufactures
Experience also includes an international aerospace manufacturer, who manufactures satelites and ground stations, for military communications.
My practical radio communications engineering experience is backed up by both City & Guilds and Degree qualifications, covering and including the following:-
- Terrestrial communications – HF, SSB, VHF, microwave etc
- Satelite communications
